Just like this incredible region in which we are situated, the SLRD is potentially a little daunting to navigate on first glimpse. Regional Districts are a unique model of government. They were developed to fill an historic gap in BC, but they have real potential as we confront a dynamic and changing future.
By bringing elected representatives together at a regional table, we have the opportunity to work with a mindset that is bigger than boundaries, and to practice the skill of collaboration.
Apart from mandated matters like emergency planning, solid and liquid waste management, and governance for rural areas, regional districts only provide the services that members or residents agree on. This model of an intentionally light-handed self-organising forum means that the SLRD is only as effective as the citizens and communities that make it up.
That is a call and an invitation to get involved, get informed and in creating the kind of world you want to live in, to look first to your neighbours, not an anonymous authority figure or mysterious superhero who will swoop in and save the day.
This website is one of our key tools to help create an informed, engaged and empowered region. The SLRD is one of the most diverse and breathtaking regions in the province. We are shameless in our passion for this place – and we want our processes to be equally apparent, to make it easy for residents, business owners, investors and visitors to find a place here and contribute.
