EVACUATION ALERT For the Downton Creek Area – DOWNTON CREEK AREA

An Evacuation Alert has been issued by the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.
The Downton Creek Fire (K71717), which was discovered on August 31st 2022, approximately 15 km south of Lillooet in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District is currently burning out of control. The BC Wildfire Service is responding.
Because of the potential danger to life and health, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has issued an Evacuation Alert for the following areas:

The Evacuation Order, pursuant to Section 12 (1) of the BC Emergency Program Act issued at 1230 hrs on September 3, 2022, for the below listed areas has been rescinded and downgraded to an Evacuation Alert:

BC Highway 12 is closed between Lillooet and Lytton, approximately 36 kilometres south of Lillooet, due to debris flow across the road. Geotechnical investiation underway. No estimated time of reopening. Please watch for traffic control at both ends of Highway 12 (Lytton and Lillooet) until the issue is resolved and cleared.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Fraser Canyon - north including Lillooet
Environment Canada has issued a weather watch for Lillooet and surrounding areas.
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings and break branches off trees. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
Nohomin Creek Wildfire (K70580)
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is monitoring the situation with regard to the Nohomin Creek wildfire (K70580), and is engaging with the various agencies involved.
BC Wildfire Service is reporting that this fire is approximately 1.7 kilometres northwest of Lytton, B.C., on the west side of the Fraser River.
