EVACUATION ALERT For the Downton Creek Area – DOWNTON CREEK AREA

Effective September 5, 2022 18:00 HRS

An Evacuation Alert has been issued by the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.

The Downton Creek Fire (K71717), which was discovered on August 31st 2022, approximately 15 km south of Lillooet in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District is currently burning out of control. The BC Wildfire Service is responding.

Because of the potential danger to life and health, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has issued an Evacuation Alert for the following areas:

Travel Advisory for Highway 12

BC Highway 12 is closed between Lillooet and Lytton, approximately 36 kilometres south of Lillooet, due to debris flow across the road. Geotechnical investiation underway. No estimated time of reopening. Please watch for traffic control at both ends of Highway 12 (Lytton and Lillooet) until the issue is resolved and cleared.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Fraser Canyon - north including Lillooet

Environment Canada has issued a weather watch for Lillooet and surrounding areas.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings and break branches off trees. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
