The SLRD FireSmart* Program is dedicated to enabling everyone who lives, works and recreates in the SLRD to be aware of the FireSmart principles, understand their role, accept responsibility and take action to protect their property and their community from the risks of wildfire.

Seasonally and pending on grant funding, free initiatives and activities such as Wildfire Community Preparedness Days, FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognitions, FireSmart Home Assessment and Rebate Programs and Vegetation Management initiatives are offered to help all SLRD homeowners and communities in their wildfire mitigation and preparedness efforts.

SLRD FireSmart Seasonal Programs

FREE Yard Waste Disposal -SLRD Area A and B  (Until November 1st 2023)

SLRD FireSmart is waiving tipping fees for vegetation debris drop off at these locations: 

Material must be vegetative yard waste only and does not include slash and wood waste generated from logging or land clearing for development. Residents must let the site attendant know they are participating in a SLRD FireSmart activity.


FREE Chipper Runs - SLRD Area C and D (Until November 1st 2023)

Free vegetation chipping/disposal service for Area C and D communities who wish to organize a FireSmart cleanup activity in their neighbourhood this fall. Each chipper run must include a minimum of 10 properties but accommodations can be made for smaller groups upon request. Interested communities can contact the SLRD FireSmart Program with a list of addresses and a range of preferred dates by emailing  Support will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.


FREE FireSmart Home Assessment

Now BOOKING FOR SPRING 2024. Property owners in the SLRD can receive a free FireSmart Home Assessment conducted by a qualified Local FireSmart Representative (LFR).

A FireSmart assessment provides homeowners with a detailed report identifying risk factors specific to their homes and property, a list of recommendations for creating defensible space and useful tips for FireSmart landscaping, home hardening and emergency preparedness.

The assessment takes roughly 90 min to complete and is performed entirely outside the home.

FireSmart Rebate Program (spring 2024)

SLRD property owners can receive financial compensation in the form of a rebate for completing FireSmart activities, based on recommendation from our qualified Local FireSmart Representative (LFR).

How to get a rebate:

STEP 1: Book a FREE assessment by emailing or by calling 604-894-6371 x262.

STEP 2: Complete some or all the FireSmart Eligible Activities recommended by the LFR within 60 days of your assessment date. Log your work hours and save your receipts if help is hired.

STEP 3 Book a post-work visit with our LFR. Submit a completed copy of the Assessment Work Hours Form and all applicable receipts. Get your rebate!

NOTE: Rebates are limited to 50% of the total cost of the eligible activities and no more than $500 per property will be awarded. The cost per hour is based on the FireSmart Canada hourly volunteer compensation rate of $29.00 per hour. For example, you need to log at least 35 hours of work (or hired help) to receive the full $500 rebate (35h x $29.00 x 50%= 500$). The number of rebates available is limited and will be issued on a first come first served basis.
