In July 2019, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) began moving ahead with the development of a Housing Need and Demand Study for all SLRD electoral areas. This plan is being developed following a successful funding application to the BC Rural Dividend Fund (Fifth Intake). Urban Matters has been engaged to lead the study. The SLRD gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.
The SLRD has been experiencing growth pressures and escalating housing costs in recent years which has led to a lack of available and affordable housing. Anecdotally, families are leaving the region and businesses are experiencing worker shortages and difficulties in finding staff to fill available jobs. The Housing Need and Demand Study will have three main components:
- Current Need Analysis
- Demand Analysis
- Supply Analysis
Robust community engagement will be central to the development of an effective study. A series of Community Workshops, key stakeholder interviews, and an online survey were conducted in October 2019. Display boards from the workshops are available below.
