Community volunteers help strengthen emergency preparedness, wildfire resilience, and neighbour-to-neighbour support across the SLRD. Whether helping communities prepare before an emergency or supporting residents during a response, volunteers play an important role in building safer, more connected communities. The following are ways residents can support emergency preparedness and volunteer in their community.
SLRD FireSmart Champions
FireSmart Champions are residents who are passionate about wildfire mitigation and emergency preparedness. Champions help connect neighbours, support local FireSmart activities, and act as a link between the SLRD FireSmart Program and their community. For more information on becoming a FireSmart Champion, contact: firesmart@slrd.bc.ca
Emergency Support Services - Canadian Red Cross
The SLRD partners with the Canadian Red Cross to deliver Emergency Social Services (ESS). ESS volunteers support individuals and families displaced by emergency events and work closely with partner ESS programs in neighbouring municipalities.
This may include helping a family displaced by a house fire, supporting reception centres, or assisting at evacuation shelters during larger emergency events.
