Jan 17, 2018
Affected Communities:
District of Squamish, Electoral Area D

ISSUED: January 17, 2017 12:00 PM

The River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for the South Coast including:

  • Howe Sound including the Stawamus River and surrounding creeks and tributaries
  • Sunshine Coast including streams around Gibsons, Sechelt and surrounding areas
  • North Shore Mountains including the Seymour River and surrounding creeks and tributaries

A strong winter storm is expected to impact the south coast of British Columbia today and into Thursday. A rainfall warning is in effect from Environment Canada, with 50-60 mm of precipitation forecasted through Thursday. Higher rainfall amounts are possible over higher terrain. Temperatures are expected to be moderate through this period, with freezing levels forecasted to be around the 1800 m level on Wednesday, and lowering to 900 m overnight. Snowmelt from mid-elevation terrain may add to runoff in the early part of this event. In watersheds with higher terrain, including the Squamish River and Lillooet River, snow may be the dominant form of precipitation, and river responses are expected to be lower than more coastal areas.

River levels are expected to rise rapidly in response to heavy rain. High streamflow is expected on rivers throughout the region, with the highest flows expected Wednesday and into Thursday.
The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will update the advisory as conditions warrant.
