Province Announces Changes to Home Owner Grant

The B.C. government has introduced legislation to amend the Home Owner Grant Act. These amendments are the first step to centralizing the home owner grant program for the 2021 tax year. The proposed amendments do not change the eligibility criteria for the program, however applications will now be processed by the Province, and not municipalities.

What this means:

  • The Province will be entirely responsible for the home owner grant program for the 2021 tax year.
  • All home owners will apply directly to the Province online or over the phone.

REMINDER: SLRD does not process property taxes.

Owners of rural property in the SLRD receive their tax notice from the Surveyor of Taxes in Victoria. In accordance with the Local Government Act, Regional Districts do not collect taxes directly from the taxpayer. As such, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District does not process property taxes.

Taxes for Regional District purposes are collected by the Province and by the member municipalities (District of Lillooet, Village of Pemberton, Resort Municipality of Whistler and District of Squamish).
