Friends and neighbours, we are reminded again this week that being in a global pandemic does not give us a free pass from non-pandemic emergencies.
Lightning storms last weekend resulted in a rash of fires within the regional district – some of which continue to burn.
A wildfire burning above Lillooet Lake, along with subsequent heavy rain, created conditions that have put communities at risk of debris flow. An evacuation order was issued on August 20 affecting Lillooet Lake Estates and Heather Jean Properties, and other residents in Electoral Area C of the SLRD. Our thoughts go out to those residents affected.
We know that our communities are resilient. And without a doubt, we will get through these challenging times together. Let’s give our neighbours – and indeed everyone around us – extra care, recognizing that for some, worries are piling up on top of each other.
The words of our Provincial Health Officer ring truer with each passing day, and each emergency that comes our way: Be kind, be calm, be safe.
Let’s take that advice, and please remember to check in on one another.
