To enable BC Hydro to continue providing secure power to the Britannia Beach area, BC Hydro will be rebuilding the aging Britannia substation.
This will involve decommissioning the existing substation and building the new substation at the same site. The new facility will have a smaller footprint than the existing substation and will be able to be expanded as demand grows. The new substation is planned to be in-service by the end of February 2020.
During construction (i.e., April 2019 to February 2020), a mobile substation located on our right-of-way will supply power to customers. The general mobile substation location is shown by the yellow box on the figure below and is the same site where a mobile substation was located in 2013.
This site was selected as it is close to the transmission and distribution lines. Some clearing will be required as site vegetation has grown in the past six years. A grounded fence will surround the mobile substation and security personnel will provide additional public safety support.
- Brief service interruptions may be experienced in April 2019 and February 2020 when the mobile substation is being connected to and disconnected from the system. Information regarding potential interruptions will be updated once a detailed construction schedule is finalized.
This redevelopment will help ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of our customers.
