Furry Creek and Britannia Beach Curbside Recycling Program Partner with Recycle BC
As of March 1, 2018 the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Electoral Area D curbside recycling service has joined the Recycle BC residential packaging and paper recycling program as a collection partner. The curbside program remains unchanged in terms of materials collected and contracted services from Carney’s Waste Systems, however the collected materials will now be managed by Recycle BC.
Recycle BC is a non-profit organization funded by businesses that produce and sell packaging and paper products in B.C. Recycle BC provides financial incentives to local governments, First Nations, businesses and non-profits in order to collect recyclable packaging and printed paper, that is then sorted and sold to end-markets to be made into new products. 157 communities across B.C. currently partner with Recycle BC.
“The SLRD is happy to report on our partnership with Recycle BC for the Furry Creek and Britannia Beach Curbside Recycling service, “ notes SLRD Environmental Services Coordinator, Marc Sole. “Working with Recycle BC allows us to benefit from their province wide collection program and will help to get our collected materials to a viable end market.”
Recycling plants across North America and over seas are clamping down on contamination rates in recycling commodities. It is now more important than ever to sort it right and put the right items in the right place. Strict financial penalties are in place for the SLRD if the contamination rate is about three per cent.
