Several road closures remain, due to avalanche activity and risk, isolating communities in Electoral Area A and some parts of Electoral Area B.

Current Road Status:

  • Road 40 (Lillooet-Pioneer Road) – open between Bralorne and Lillooet; however Mission Mountain avalanche gates remain closed.
  • Highway 99 - open
  • Highway 12 - open
  • Mission Mountain is closed due to avalanche deposit removal.
  • Highline Road is closed due to avalanche blocking the road at Telford Bridge to seton Portage. Deposit removal is in progress.

Motorists are reminded to prepare an emergency kit, as conditions can change quickly and roads may need to close again at any time.

Follow www.drivebc.ca for updates.

Wellness Checks and Deliveries:

The SLRD would like to thank the local volunteers who conducted door-to-door wellness checks on Friday in Gun Lake, Gold Bridge and Bralorne. Wellness checks will continue today on Gun Creek Road and the Tyaughton Lake area.

Weather conditions hampered attempts to deliver supplies into the Bridge River Valley by helicopter on Friday, however one flight did get through to deliver emergency parcels that included urgent prescription medications. A further delivery of urgent supplies is expected to arrive by air this morning (Saturday).

TELUS Outage:

Cell, landline and Internet service remains out in Electoral Area A, with a helicopter and a crew on standby to repair the transmission tower near Mission Mountain Road. Ongoing adverse flight conditions have so far prevented access and the crew was again unable to get into this area Friday by air or land.

The SLRD has contracted a charter boat to deliver essential supplies across Seton Lake from Lillooet to Seton Portage over the weekend. This boat will carry groceries, fuel and medication. It will also transport residents for medical and other urgent appointments from Seton Portage to Lillooet and back.

UPDATE: January 14, 2021
10:40 a.m.

Update on road closures affecting Area A and Area B

Several road closures remain, due to avalanche activity and risk, isolating communities in Electoral Area A and some parts of Electoral Area B.

Current Road Status:

  • Road 40 (Lillooet-Pioneer Road) – partially open to local access as follows:
    • Open Bralorne to Tyaughton Lake
    • Open Lillooet to Yalakom Rd
    • CLOSED between Yalakom Road and Tyaughton Lake Road
  • Highway 99 - open between Lillooet and Pemberton
  • Highway 12 - open between Lytton and Lillooet
  • Mission Mountain - open to local only (connecting roads closed)
  • Highline Road remains closed

While Highway 99 has re-opened between Lillooet and just north of Pemberton, residents are reminded that conditions can change quickly. Please prepare with enough supplies to allow you to stay in place, should the highway be closed again. If you don’t have one, this is a good time to put together your 72-hour kit.

The SLRD is coordinating with the Gun Lake Fire Protection Society via satellite communications for emergency support operations in the area if required. Residents who are able to do so, are asked to connect with neighbours to see if they are ok, and to let them know if they have the ability to communicate out for emergency purposes.

The SLRD continues to work on coordinating delivery of groceries and urgent medications; conditions have not permitted helicopter access, but as soon as the weather permits, a delivery will be made. The SLRD is working with the Gun Lake Fire Protection Service and others in the area to complete door-to-door wellness checks in Electoral Area A.

TELUS Outage affecting communications

A TELUS outage continues to affect communications for all communities in Electoral Area A. While the communities have power, all Internet, cell and phone communications are down. Work to restore these services has been delayed, due to severe conditions, which have limited crews’ access to the area. The SLRD is coordinating with the Gun Lake Fire Protection Society via satellite communications for emergency support operations in the area if required. Residents who are able to do so, are asked to connect with neighbours to let them know if they have the ability to communicate out for emergency purposes via a satellite communication service.

The SLRD Emergency Operations Centre is active in response to multiple road closures due to avalanches, resulting in a number of communities become isolated, including all communities of Electoral Area A, plus the Highline Road, Seton Portage, Road 40 and the Yalakom Valley.

Current road closures:

  • Highway 99 from Lillooet to Mt Currie
  • Road 40 from the AppleSprings Avalanche gate (Avalanche gates are down)
  • Highline Road between D’Arcy and Seton Portage (Avalanche gates are down)

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) and Dawson Road Maintenance have brought in additional heavy equipment and have extra crews on standby once conditions are safe to proceed. It is currently not safe to proceed with this work due to the extreme conditions currently resulting in multiple avalanches daily.

Once it is safe for crews to proceed, even with the extra equipment and crews, it could take a couple of days to reopen closed roads, and if conditions deteriorate again crews will need to stop and pull back out.

Residents should plan for the affected roads remaining closed until Sunday or Monday.

The SLRD is in contact with community emergency contacts in each affected community, to assess any known or developing urgent needs in each area. We are coordinating with Emergency Management BC, MoTI, the Canadian Red Cross and first responder agencies as needed.

For immediate life safety concerns, contact 9-1-1.

For other emergency support contact the EOC at 604-894-6371 and ask to speak to an EOC Information Officer.

Electoral Area A (all areas including Gold Bridge, Bralorne, Gun Lake): Area currently has power, but all internet, cell and phone communications are down. Service crews will not be able to get in until the roads re-open, so this outage will be at least as long as the road closure period. The SLRD is coordinating with the Gun Lake Fire Protection Society via satellite comms for emergency support operations in the area if required.
