BC Product Stewardship

The Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) provides a helpful, easy resource for finding recycling and composting facilities that are close to you. All you need to do is:

  • Visit the RCBC Recyclepedia;
  • Choose the item in menu that you wish to recycle (e.g. batteries);
  • Specify what type of item you would like to recycle in the second menu (e.g. automotive batteries);
  • Select where you live or the closest population centre to you in the third menu (e.g. Gold Bridge)

Product Stewardship Programs

Also known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), product stewardship in British Columbia is the principle that producers are responsible for the entire life cycle of their product, from the extraction of the materials needed to manufacture the product, all the way through to the product’s collection and recycling. EPR also means that not only producers, but those that design, sell, or use a product are also an important part of reducing its environmental impact.

There are a number of stewardship organizations working in British Columbia that are appointed by the provincial government to manage recycling programs across the province, and the number continues to increase each year.
