The District of Squamish is planning to repair the Paradise Valley bailey bridge abutments in 2026. The abutments provide critical support of the bridge structure at both ends of the bridge and have been identified for repair through routine District bridge inspections. This work is required to improve the condition and safety of the bridge.
The bridge is located approximately 17 kilometres north of downtown Squamish, along the sole access road for residences, businesses and infrastructure on the north side of the bridge; for both the District of Squamish and the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) jurisdiction.
Following the identified deficiencies in the abutments, the District hired a bridge engineer to complete a design for repairing the abutments. It is expected that there will be traffic access disruptions during construction. The District, in coordination with the SLRD, is working to understand and minimize the impacts of the repair work for public, commercial and emergency services access.
Some access disruptions are anticipated while the repair works are being completed. Given the critical importance of this bridge for community access, innovative design and construction methods are being explored with consultants which seek to minimize disruptions. Minimizing access disruptions will be a key piece of the evaluation criteria for all designs, as well as considerations around budget and permitting requirements. The District intends to complete the work in 2026 as quickly and efficiently as possible, in order to minimize community access constraints.

August 21, 2026: The District of Squamish has now awarded the construction contract for this work, and the contractor has confirmed work will begin Monday, August 24.
Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout the upgrades, however several nighttime closures between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be required.
Emergency vehicle access would be reinstated in the event of an emergency, and work would be postponed to facilitate evacuation or responder access. Short-term daytime traffic disruptions and increased noise levels should also be expected while the upgrades are underway.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of October 20206.
Impacts:
Overnight bridge closures: Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11.
The first and second overnight closures are projected for:
- Thursday, September 10 from 10 p.m. - 6 a.m.
- Friday, September 11 from 10 p.m. - 6 a.m.
Please plan ahead as all traffic, pedestrians and cyclists will be restricted from crossing the bridge during this time. Exceptions will be made for emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicle access would be facilitated in the event of an emergency and work would be postponed to facilitate evacuation or responder access. If you have an emergency and need to cross the bridge during closure hours, please call 911.
Several other nighttime bridge closures between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be required throughout the project. The contractor, District of Squamish, the SLRD and emergency response partners will work closely together to ensure emergency response vehicles can respond to any public safety emergencies during these nighttime closures.
