Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan Update Public and Technical Advisory Committee

The SLRD is looking for residents, businesses, and organizations interested in serving on the Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan Update Public and Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) for the duration of the plan update (estimated to be 3 years).


Background


Regional districts are required under the Environmental Management Act to develop and implement a Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP). The SLRD, including its electoral areas and member municipalities, manage their waste in accordance with the Solid Waste and Resource Management plan approved by the Ministry of Environment and Parks in 2019, amended in 2023. 


Public and Technical Advisory Committee


The purpose of the PTAC is to provide input on topics related to the development of the SWRMP Update, and to provide advice and recommendations on the proposed Plan to the SLRD Board. 

Applicants should:

  • Reside within the region
  • Demonstrate community/committee involvement and the ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Be interested in and/or demonstrate a commitment to waste reduction, sustainability, and climate action.
  • Be experienced with waste, waste diversion, and recycling.
  • Be available to commit to roughly 4 – 6 times per year for 3-hour sessions over the duration of the update, which is anticipated to be 3 years (2028). 


The committee will consist of a balance of:

  • Technical and non-technical members, 
  • Urban and rural areas
  • Industry and public members with a diversity of backgrounds and interests.
    • Private sector waste management service providers (e.g. haulers, etc)
    • Private sector solid waste facility representatives (organics, wood waste, etc)
    • Non-profit groups with an interest in solid waste management (e.g. reuse, repair, etc)
    • Large industrial/ commercial /institutional solid waste generator (e.g. mining, forestry, tourism, education, health, etc)
    • Business representatives (e.g. food service, retail, groceries, etc.)
    • Multi-dwelling residences representatives
    • Members at Large (e.g. community association, youth, senior, etc.)
