Government-funded financial support following disasters is regulated by the Province of BC, under the Compensation and Disaster Financial Assistance Regulation. Disaster recovery costs for which insurance was readily available are not eligible for provincial Disaster Financial Assistance. Under this regulation, secondary residences are also not eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance.
While disaster financial assistance and insurance matters are beyond the regional district's jurisdiction, the SLRD understands the challenges facing this community, especially for those who were uninsured or underinsured, and whose secondary residences were affected. The SLRD has spent time exploring solutions to benefit all affected residents. Despite advocacy and meetings with provincial agencies and IBC, these regulations still apply. We will continue to share any new funding avenues or information that becomes available.
Community members who suffered impacts to their principal residence and can provide documented proof that they could not purchase insurance are encouraged to email recovery@slrd.bc.ca so the SLRD can continue to advocate on their behalf.
