The Village of Pemberton, in partnership with the Squamish‐Lillooet Regional District, presents the fourth annual Emergency Preparedness Week Open House on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 at the Pemberton Community Barn from 11am to 2pm.
“As former fire chief, I’ve experienced firsthand the devastation caused by fires, vehicle accidents and other emergencies, and know how being ready for the unexpected can mean the difference between life and death,” says Russell Mack, SLRD Electoral Area C Director. “Emergency Preparedness Week and the Open House offer resources to help people plan ahead and get prepared. It’s also a great opportunity for members of our community to meet and thank the emergency responders that work hard, and sometimes risk much, to keep our communities safe.”
The Open House is part of the “Get Prepared” campaign that encourages Canadians to take three simple steps to prepare for a range of emergencies: Know the risks, make a plan, and get an emergency kit. The event will provide information on how to cope for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency, enabling first responders to focus on those in urgent need.
“We encourage residents to ensure they have the resources in place to sustain themselves for at least 72 hours in case emergency responders cannot get to them in time,” says Pemberton Mayor, Mike Richman. “Being aware of your risks and preparing for them will enable a quick response, and help keep you and your family safe.”
Residents will meet local emergency responders and are invited to tour the emergency vehicles used by Pemberton Fire Rescue, RCMP, BC Ambulance and Pemberton Search and Rescue. Kids can meet Smokey the Bear and enjoy the Fire Department’s hot dog BBQ. The Village of Pemberton, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District and Pemberton Valley Dyking District will host displays with information on emergency preparedness.
Stop by on Saturday, May 7th and meet your local response personnel. Learn the risks, make a plan and assemble an emergency kit.
