WildSafeBC–SLRD Coordinator to bring wildlife awareness to communities
Pemberton, BC – For the second year in a row, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is working with WildSafeBC to promote wildlife awareness in communities throughout the region.
Following the success of last year’s program, a Community Coordinator will deliver outreach and education programs with the goal of preventing conflicts with wildlife and providing residents with the information they need to keep themselves, and wildlife, safe.
Devin Pawluk is returning as the SLRD’s WildSafeBC Community Coordinator, and is in the position as of April 19, 2021. Through to November, Pawluk will deliver a number of modified WildSafeBC program initiatives including door-to-door outreach, garbage tagging, webinar delivery of the highly-requested WildSafeBC Ranger presentations for school-aged children, as well as their Wildlife Awareness and Safety Education presentations.
“We are pleased to be able to bring back this important program for a second year,” said SLRD Board Chair, Jen Ford. “We had some great success last year, even with the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant a shift in the way some of the programs are delivered. It will be important to build upon that initial success, and to maintain momentum moving forward, so that we can continue to do the important work of reducing human-wildlife conflict.”
WildSafeBC and the SLRD will continue to provide wildlife activity news and tips through social media channels, as the season progresses. Follow @WildSafeBCSquamishLillooetRD on Facebook.
Please report wildlife in conflict to the Conservation Officer Service 24/7 at 1-877-952-7277. Residents can also report sightings of bear, cougar, coyote or wolf in an urban area. These reports are uploaded daily to WildSafeBC’s Wildlife Alert Reporting Program (WARP), available at www.wildsafebc.com/warp. This program allows the public to see what wildlife has been reported in their neighbourhood and be alerted of new sightings.
