Demare scheduled to be sworn in at February 26, 2020 Board Meeting

Pemberton, BC – Sal Demare has been elected to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Board of Directors as the Electoral Area A Director. General voting day for the Electoral Area A Director by-election was Saturday February 15, 2020. Mr. Demare is scheduled to be sworn in at the SLRD Board meeting on February 26, 2020.

A by-election for the Area A Director position was required after Director John Courchesne resigned last fall for personal reasons. Upon Mr. Courchesne’s resignation, the position was temporarily filled by Steven Oakley, who was previously the Alternate Director for Electoral Area A.   Mr. Oakley and Mr. Demare were the two candidates running for the Director position in the by-election.  The official by-election results are available on the SLRD website:

“On behalf of the SLRD Board of Directors, I would like to thank both candidates for their commitment to their communities, and to the regional district,” said SLRD Board Chair, Tony Rainbow.

“It’s a big commitment, to run for public office, and we are fortunate to have had community-minded individuals come forward to fill this important role,” he said. “The Board looks forward to working with Mr. Demare in his new role as Electoral Area A Director.  The Board wishes to thank Mr. Oakley for filling the role of Director on an interim basis until the by-election could be held.”

The SLRD is governed by a 10-member board of directors composed of four electoral area directors and six municipal directors (one director from the District of Lillooet, one director from the Village of Pemberton, two directors from the RMOW and two directors from the District of Squamish).

Electoral Area directors are elected by rural area voters during the General Local Elections (held most recently in B.C. on October 20, 2018) to serve a four-year term. Mr. Demare will serve for the remainder of the current 2018-2022 term.

Municipal directors are first elected to their respective municipal council and then appointed by their council to serve on the regional district board.

The current SLRD Board of Directors:

  • Sal Demare, Electoral Area A (to be sworn in on February 26, 2020)
  • Vivian Birch-Jones, Electoral Area B
  • Russell Mack, Electoral Area C
  • Tony Rainbow, Electoral Area D (Chair)
  • Peter Busse, District of Lillooet
  • Mike Richman, Village of Pemberton
  • Jack Crompton, Resort Municipality of Whistler
  • Jen Ford, Resort Municipality of Whistler (Vice-Chair)
  • Karen Elliott, District of Squamish
  • Doug Race, District of Squamish

In addition to serving on the SLRD Board, the Directors also serve on standing and select committees as well as on external boards, committees and commissions representing a broad range of issues.

SLRD Board meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the SLRD boardroom at 1350 Aster Street in Pemberton. The meeting schedule, agendas and minutes are available on the SLRD website.
