The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) Board of Directors is deeply saddened by the passing of former Electoral Area B Director, Mickey Macri.
Mr. Macri was a five-term Director, having served on the SLRD Board from 2002 – 2018. He was elected by acclamation in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011, and was elected by voting in 2014. He did not seek re-election in 2018, and was succeeded by current SLRD Electoral Area B Director, and Vice Chair, Vivian Birch-Jones.
“Mickey was an exceptional person, with an unwavering commitment to all of the communities in Area B, and his constituents,” said Birch-Jones. “Mickey was a relationship-builder, a listener and a good friend. He was a mentor to me, in my early days as Board Director, showing nothing but patience and kindness,” she said. “I will forever be grateful to Mickey for his support, and for his many, many years of hard work.”
During his time on the SLRD Board, Macri was instrumental in a number lasting initiatives, including the creation of the Lillooet Agriculture and Food Society, an independent, non-profit society created to implement the SLRD’s award-winning Area B Agricultural Plan, strengthening the agricultural sector in the Lillooet area. He was involved in the comprehensive Fire Services Review which resulted in improvements to fire services throughout the SLRD, and he was a relentless advocate for transportation improvements, including pushing for provincial funding for improvements to the 10 Mile Slide area. He served on the Northern Economic Development and Initiatives Committee to advance economic initiatives in the northern SLRD.
“In the SLRD, we are all better off for having had Mickey Macri in our corner, representing constituents and the community,” said SLRD Board Chair, Jen Ford. “On behalf of the SLRD Board of Directors, I extend our deepest condolences to Mickey’s loved ones on their loss.”
