The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) Board of Directors is deeply saddened by the passing of David Rittberg, former Chief of the Britannia Beach Volunteer Fire Department (BBVFD).
Mr. Rittberg served on the BBVFD from 2007 – 2021, spending the last five years as Fire Chief, before retiring in 2021 and turning over the reigns of the department to his longtime colleague, Rob Nicholls, who had previously served as Deputy Fire Chief.
Mr. Rittberg built the department into what it is today – a robust team of dedicated firefighters serving the communities of Britannia Beach and Furry Creek, in Electoral Area D of the SLRD.
“David was an exceptional individual, who took great pride in serving his community,” said SLRD Electoral Area D Director, Tony Rainbow. “He was hard-working and humble. He was a man of many interests, and of great knowledge and skill and he was generous in sharing his experience and expertise. I am grateful for the contributions David made to the community, and I am honoured to have considered him a friend,” Rainbow said.
“He built a tremendous team that continues to deliver his legacy of service to the community. He was proud of this work, and of his team of firefighters who were not just colleagues, but whom he also considered to be family. David’s passing is a tremendous loss for the community, and he will be deeply missed.”
“In the SLRD, we are fortunate to benefit from the work of exceptional people who make considerable contributions to their community, and Mr. Rittberg was no exception to this,” added SLRD Board Chair, Jen Ford.
“On behalf of the SLRD Board of Directors, I extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Rittberg’s loved ones and to the Britannia Beach Volunteer Fire Department on their loss.”
