Community Update #24: Place Glacier Flood Hazard

Monitoring equipment and field observations confirm that flood waters from Place Glacier are now moving downstream through Place Creek. Technical experts continue to monitor conditions closely and high flows are expected for the next 1-2 days.

The Evacuation Order remains in effect for affected properties in the Gates Lake and Poole Creek area. Residents under Evacuation Order must remain out of the area until the Order has been rescinded by the SLRD.

SLRD staff, technical experts, and emergency response partners are actively monitoring conditions. Over the coming hours they will:

• Observe and assess impacts to Place Creek, Poole Creek, infrastructure, and nearby properties. This includes coordinating with the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) to monitor conditions at the Poole Creek Road culvert.
• Determine whether any additional emergency response measures are required based on observed conditions. 
• Conduct rapid damage assessments once peak flows have subsided to evaluate impacts and determine the next steps for response and recovery.

Residents and members of the public are reminded to stay away from Place Creek, Poole Creek, Gates Lake, and all nearby water channels. Fast-moving water, debris, erosion, and unstable streambanks present a significant safety risk. Please do not travel to the area to observe conditions.

Any impacts to roads will be monitored and reported on by DriveBC. The most up to date 
information about any roads impacted by this event will be found on their website. 

The Evacuation Order will remain in effect until monitoring information and on-the-ground assessments confirm that it is safe for residents to return. At that time, the SLRD will rescind the Order and notify residents through official communication channels.

Emergency Support Services (ESS)
Emergency Support Services (ESS) are available for primary residents affected by the Evacuation Order and can be accessed by calling the Canadian Red Cross 24/7 Emergency Line at 1-888-800-6493.

The following emergency measures are currently in effect:

• Evacuation Order issued at 10:00 a.m. on June 25, 2026
• Declaration of State of Local Emergency (SOLE)
