Community Update #25: Place Glacier Flood Hazard

The outburst flood that began earlier today continues to progress. Technical experts advise that outburst flood water levels have not yet reached their expected peak, with the highest flows anticipated to build within the next 18 to 36 hours. The community can expect to see increased flows as the event continues to move through the system. The Place Glacier flood hazard continues to present a significant risk to public safety and the Evacuation Order for affected properties in the Gates Lake and Poole Creek area remains in effect.

Technical experts continue to monitor conditions at the glacier site closely. The SLRD conducted visual ground assessments throughout the day and will continue those assessments on Monday, July 20.

The visual ground assessment identified overland flooding and increased flow in Poole Creek, including rising water levels at the Poole Creek Road culvert. The SLRD continues to communicate with the Ministry of Transit and Transit (MOTT) regarding the status of the culvert and has shared observations, concerns and images regarding the culverts current capacity.

There are currently no travel restrictions related to Pemberton Portage Road. The most up to date information about any road impacts will be found on the DriveBC website.

Residents and members of the public are reminded to stay away from Place Creek, Poole Creek, Gates Lake, and all nearby water channels. Fast-moving water, debris, erosion, and unstable streambanks present a significant safety risk. Please do not travel to the area to observe conditions.

The SLRD recognizes the ongoing challenges and uncertainty this event has created for residents. We thank the community for their patience, cooperation, and continued attention to safety messaging as this event progresses.
