Electoral Area B, Pear Lake Wildfire Recovery Outreach - September 3, 2026

SLRD staff will be conducting door-to-door outreach beginning around midday on Thursday, September 3, 2026 to connect with SLRD residents in Area B who were under evacuation order due to the Pear Lake wildfire.

Staff will provide affected residents with:

• Details about a free fridge and freezer collection taking place Friday, September 4
• Canadian Red Cross clean-up kits
• Information about waste disposal at SLRD facilities
• Information about returning home safely and wildfire recovery information and supports

SLRD staff conducting the outreach are from the Protective Services and Environmental Services departments and will be able to answer a wide range of questions. They will be wearing SLRD uniforms and name tags and will arrive in an SLRD logo-branded vehicle.

Fridge and freezer collection – Friday, September 4

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District is offering a temporary fridge and freezer pickup and disposal program free of charge for residents who had to evacuate due to the Pear Lake wildfire. 
This curbside collection, supported by the Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR), will be available on Friday, September 4 at 7 a.m. for impacted residents who wish to dispose of their fridge or freezer.

Residents who would like a fridge or freezer collected should:

• Place your appliances by the curbside at 7 a.m. the morning of September 4 – a limited pickup window is being offered to limit wildlife attractants.
• No need to clean the inside or outside of the appliances but seal the appliances closed to avoid spoiled food spillage.

Need help moving an appliance?

Residents who need help to move their appliances to the curbside may register for additional support in advance by calling 1-844-815-6199. You must register for this service in advance, as an address and signed waiver are both required. 

Other disposal options

If you are not able or don’t want to participate in the curbside collection program on September 4, but still need to dispose of your appliance, the SLRD can also accept fridges and freezers at open SLRD waste facilities free of charge.

For drop-off at an SLRD facility:

• Bring your appliances during open hours to an SLRD waste facility.
• Appliances must be cleaned – for information on how to safely clean your fridge or freezer, please review the SLRD’s Food Safety and cleaning after a wildfire guideline.
• Spoiled food should be double bagged and disposed of as regular waste – tipping fees apply.

NOTE: Some facilities may be limited in capacity – Devine Transfer Station does not accept appliances, and Pemberton Transfer Station has limited capacity.

If you do not need to dispose of your fridge or freezer, ensure that you double bag spoiled food and dispose of it as regular garbage, and use personal protective equipment such as N-95 masks and rubber gloves while cleaning.
