SLRD announces new tipping fees at the PembertonTransfer Station

Changes will better align user fees throughout the corridor

Pemberton, BC – The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) Board has approved a new wastemanagement bylaw that will see a new tipping fee schedule at the PembertonTransfer Station beginning February 1, 2014. The per bag rate will increase to$1.00 for a small bag and $2.00 for a large bag. With this change, the minimumcharge of $2.00 has been eliminated.

The biggest change comes with respect to construction and demolitionwaste tipping fees which have been aligned with rates at the Whistler Transferstation. This change will minimize the financial incentive to tip Whistlerwaste in Pemberton, which in the past has placed an additional taxpayer burdenon the Pemberton system.

The lastchange to the Pemberton Transfer Station tipping fee rates was in 2005. Theupdated fees are a result of increased disposal fees at the Squamish Landfill, which saw disposal costs increase from $98 per tonne to $108 per tonne in 2013.In conjunction with this increase, fees at the landfill doubled to $216 per tonnefor loads containing 5% or more recyclable material.

“We’re committed to providing a cost-effective, fair and environmentallysustainable waste and recycling operation to the residents of Pemberton andsurrounding area,” says Janis Netzel, SLRD Director of Utilities andEnvironmental Services. “Aligning service costs throughout the Sea to Skycorridor will help us achieve this goal.”

2014 will also see the implementation of new diversion programs includingthe new producer funded printed-paper and packaging recycling programs scheduledto launch in the spring. The Regional District is also in the early stages ofexploring opportunities of working with local entrepreneurs to pilot anorganics collections program in 2014.
