The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Board proclaimed November 30 – December 6, 2015 “Buy Local Week.”
Download the Proclamation here.
Buy Local Week is an annual celebration of local business.
Because they sponsor your soccer team, donate to local causes, hire your neighbours and always remember your name.
Because they add character.
Because they create an unforgettable sense of place.
Because they make for a more robust local economy.
DYK? For every $100 spent with a locally owned, BC-based business, $46 is recirculated back into B.C.’s economy.
Buy Local Week is timed for the first week in December to celebrate the contribution BC-owned businesses and BC-made products make to our economy and communities, and to invite a more mindful approach to pre-Christmas consumption.
This week, we honour the efforts of SLRD-based business owners and the citizens who purchase from them. Happy Buy Local Week.
Show your locavore love!
1. Tag your local businesses and favourite locally-made products on Instagram #BCBuyLocal
2. Send a Holiday Greeting/love note to your favourite local business, and let other Tyee readers around BC and the Lower Mainland know how many great local businesses are in our region. (You could win up to $4000 in prizes.) http://buylocal.thetyee.ca/
3. Give Santa a nudge, by picking something homegrown, hand-crafted, locally-made or regionally sourced for your stocking this year.
4. Most powerfully, shift some of your spending to support locally owned businesses.
According to 2014 data, the average Canadian family will spend $1500 extra during the winter holiday season. What if some portion of that was kept closer to home, invested in the people and places that make our neighbourhoods unique?
