The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, in partnership with Squamish Climate Action Network (Squamish CAN), is conducting curbside collection service checks to help residents improve their recycling and organics sorting. The Tune-Up Team will be visiting Britannia Beach and Furry Creek starting May 13 to September 30, 2026.
Recycling can be confusing; Curbside Tune-Ups are an opportunity for everyone in the community to receive individualized feedback on what they can improve and how they can ensure their recycling efforts preserve the quality and market value of BC’s recycling. Improved quality means a higher percentage of the material you put in your tote gets recycled and recirculated into the economy.
What you should know
- The Tune-Up Team are contracted waste educators who assist the SLRD with outreach in Britannia Beach and Furry Creek to support curbside collection contamination reduction efforts.
- The Tune-Up Team will wear identification and high-visibility vests.
- The Tune-Up Team will handle items in the curbside recycling totes.
- Residents will receive personalized feedback in the form of a “Recycling Champion” tag or an “Oops” tag on the side of the tote or stuck to the inside of the lid on rainy days.
- Totes containing hazardous material (examples: propane tanks, butane cylinders, batteries, flammables or sharps) or large items that damage collection equipment will not be serviced and removed from the curb with a yellow warning tag.
Let’s make you a Recycling Champion
- Containers are empty and rinsed.
- Curbside recycling tote contains: mixed containers (plastic, metal and cartons), paper and printed paper packaging.
- Curbside recycling tote does not contain depot drop-off items such as: Flexible plastics (i.e. tofu packaging, plastic bags or overwrap, chip bags, bags with plastic zip closure - other examples available here), glass bottles and jars, and foam packaging. For more details on how to properly sort curbside recycling, visit slrd.bc.ca/lovethisplace/aread.
- No Wishful Thinking - Putting an item in the recycling tote does not mean it will be recycled. This is detrimental to the paper and packaging recycling program managed by Recycle BC.
