Local governance and community engagement vital to the success of the region
Pemberton, BC – The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is proud to recognize Local Government Awareness Week (May 11-17), as proclaimed by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM).
This province-wide initiative underscores the importance of understanding the services provided by regional governments, and encouraging community participation in local governance.
Local Government Awareness Week is an annual initiative led by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) to educate the public about local government responsibilities and encourage greater participation in the decision-making process. This year, UBCM is highlighting the importance of infrastructure.
“Infrastructure is the backbone of our communities,” said Jen Ford, SLRD Board Chair. “It’s easy to take things like clean drinking water and reliable waste management for granted, but they are essential for everyday life. Our infrastructure enables the SLRD to deliver reliable services that support the diverse needs of our communities.”
The SLRD offers many ways for people living in the region to learn about local governance, and get involved. This Local Government Awareness Week, the SLRD encourages residents to:
• Explore how the Board is structured and how decisions are made.
• Learn about all of the services the SLRD provide.
• Read the SLRD’s 2024-2026 Strategic Plan.
• Subscribe to the SLRD Update newsletter.
• Engage in SLRD Board and Committee meetings.
• Follow the SLRD on Facebook.
“We hope this week encourages more people to engage with our processes and take an active role in shaping the future of our communities,” said Ford. “We want residents to stay connected. This is your regional government, and we want you to be part of the conversation.”
