Keep wildlife wild and your community safe
Improper storage of garbage, recycling, and organics totes is attracting bears in Britannia Beach and Furry Creek — creating serious risks for you, your neighbours and wildlife.
This is also a violation of the SLRD’s Wildlife Attractant Bylaw. Residents leaving unsecured totes outdoors, other than on collection days, may be fined.
What the Bylaw requires:
- Waste totes must be stored indoors unless secured in a wildlife-resistant container within a wildlife-resistant enclosure.
- Totes may only be unlocked and placed at the curb between 6 a.m.–7 p.m. on collection days.
- Unsecured totes left out early will be subject to fines.
Help protect the bears and your neighbourhood:
- Keep all totes locked and secured at all times, except during collection windows.
- Freeze your smelly items until collection day.
- Lock your vehicle doors — even small amounts of garbage left inside can attract wildlife.
- If totes must be stored outside, they must be secured to an immovable object and locked closed to prevent access and dragging.
