Léon LeBrun is one of 150 remarkable Canadians receiving a “Caring Canadian” award today from the Governor General for his work on trails in BC, including the SLRD's Sea to Sky Trail.
He has been a member of the Sea to Sky Trail Steering Committee since 2008 and has provided great support and advice over the years.
LeBrun is a 20 year volunteer with the Trans Canada Trail and Trails BC, currently the Trails BC President, and has been the driving force behind the development of non-motorized trails in British Columbia. Working on projects such as the Chilliwack River Valley Trails and the Great Blue Heron Way, in addition to establishing a linguistic bridge through organizing the “Festival du Bois,” he has connected Canadians, promoted environmental preservation and helped create a national legacy.
His efforts have not waned since he received the Diamond Jubilee medal in 2013 for his tireless work as a trails champion. He is one of the few Canadians to have cycled or walked the entire British Columbia Trans Canada Trail. He’s renowned for his annual Trans Canada challenge, which he has been organizing for more than 10 years on International Trails Day, and for his famous “steppette”, a jump-and-twirl move he performs once a trail is completed. He is an inspiration to all who work by his side.
Created in 1995, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. The award also brings to light the example set by volunteers, whose compassion and engagement are a part of our Canadian character.
