Economic Development

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) covers 16,500 square kilometres in the Coast Mountains.
The region includes forests, glaciers, rivers, lakes, and fertile agricultural land.

Communities are diverse—from the historic mining town of Bralorne (Area A), to the ranch lands of West Pavilion (Area B), to the international resort destination of Whistler.

Tourism

The southern SLRD is well known for outdoor recreation. Tourism is also growing in the northern part of the region.

With its rugged landscape, rich cultural heritage, and small-town communities, the northern SLRD is becoming an attractive destination for visitors.

Agriculture

Agriculture is an important part of the regional economy.

  • South: Pemberton and Squamish valleys
  • North: Lillooet area

The Lillooet region has a long history of cattle ranching, farming, and fruit production.
New activities—like hops, grapes, and wine-making—are adding to this sector.

Other Industries

Other key industries in the SLRD include:

  • Construction
  • Forestry
  • Renewable energy
  • Mining

Our Role

The SLRD supports communities, the environment, and a strong, sustainable economy by:

  • Supporting the well-being of residents and visitors
  • Protecting the natural environment
  • Enhancing outdoor recreation
  • Promoting balanced and sustainable economic development

We do this by working with partners across the region.
